BIOGRAPHYBethArtistPicWebSized

Beth Lerman was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area where she began oil painting at the age of five. She took lessons throughout her early childhood until middle school at which point her artistic interests shifted to the realm of musical theatre. She didn’t pick up a paint brush again until age 20 when she was a junior at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY. Her first painting as an adult was of the Greek  goddess, Athena, which she rendered in acrylics after studying the Greek pantheon in an art history course.  She continued painting periodically in acrylics until she became frustrated with the medium. In 2008, she decided that she needed further instruction to be able to achieve the realism for which she strove, and she began studying under the watchful eye of portrait artist, Amanda Cadogan, in Chicago, IL.  It was at this time that Lerman abandoned the use of acrylics for a Renaissance  technique which, again, employed the use of oil paints. After moving back to New York in 2009, she continued honing her skills in this style until 2010 when she became assistant to artist Madeline von Foerster. Von Foerster introduced Lerman to the “Mische  Technique”–a technique which combines oil paints and egg tempera to produce exceptionally luminous paintings.  Lerman has continued her studies in the Mische Technique under the guidance of Professors Philip Rubinov-Jacobson and Mantra Cora in both the United States and in Austria.   Lerman moved back to Chicago in the summer of 2014 where she has continued working on the Zeitgeist Tarot.
